Esteem

Self-esteem is a term in psychology to reflect a person's overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs (for example, "I am competent", "I am worthy") and emotions such as triumph, despair, pride and shame: some would distinguish how 'the self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem, the positive or negative evaluation of the self, is how we feel about it'. A person’s self-concept consists of the beliefs one has about oneself, one’s self perception, or, as Hamlyn (1983: 241) expresses it, “the picture of oneself”. Baumeister (1997) described Self concept as totally perception which people hold about him/ herself (p. 681). It is not the “facts” about one-self but rather what one believes to be true about one-self (Sarah Mercer, p. 14). Early researchers used self-concept as a descriptive construct, such as ‘I am an athlete’ (Rosenberg 1979).

However, recent theories adapted self esteem with more evaluative statements like ‘I am good at tennis’ (Harter 1996). The latter statement not only describes the self, as the individual identifies himself or herself, but evaluates the self by putting worthiness on it. Therefore, self-esteem is defined as both descriptive and evaluative self-related statements. As a social psychological construct, self-esteem is attractive because researchers have conceptualized it as an influential predictor of relevant outcomes, such as academic achievement (Marsh 1990) or exercise behavior (Hagger et al. 1998). In addition, self-esteem has also been treated as an important outcome due to its close relation with psychological well-being (Marsh 1989). Self-concept is widely believed to be composed of more than just perceived competence, and this leads to the relative degree of evaluative and cognitive beliefs of the construct.

Self-esteem is viewed as the most evaluative and affective of the three constructs (Harter, 1999a). Overlay, self-concept is considered as the beliefs about perceived competence and self-evaluative in a specific domain.Self-esteem can apply specifically to a particular dimension (for example, "I believe I am a good writer and I feel happy about that") or have global extent (for example, "I believe I am a bad person, and feel bad about myself in general"). Psychologists usually regard self-esteem as an enduring personality characteristic ("trait" self-esteem), though normal, short-term variations ("state" self-esteem) also exist.

Synonyms or near-synonyms of self-esteem include: self-worth, self-regard, self-respect, and self-integrity. According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, "self-love" is "the instinct or desire to promote one's well-being"; while La Rochefoucauld considered 'that amour-propre (self-regard) is the mainspring of all human activities'.

How do you guys boost your self esteem?
Q. I have the worst self esteem possible, i have amazing friends that try to help me out. But i can't help think that they are lying to me. What do you guys do in the morning to boost your own self esteem? Any tips?
Asked by BBXX - Tue Jun 16 21:56:20 2009 - Singles & Dating - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Get a good night's sleep so that you arent tired, lazy, and in a bad mood the next morning. When you wake up, set yourself mini-goals for the day and try to accomplish them. For example, set yourself a goal that you'll study for 3 hours, go for a 30 minute run, have lunch/movie with a friend, and cook a healthy meal. At the end of the day look back on your day and see if you were able to accomplish what you set out to do. If so then it should boost your self-esteem alot. Then do it again the next day with bigger goals. Another piece of advice is to not live in the past. If you keeping thinking about the past and poor decisions you made, then it will give you a negative attitude on life and a poor self-esteem. Be optimist and happy and… [cont.]

What link is there between low esteem and suicide?
Q. I'm thinking that low esteem is a precurosor to suicide, is this correct? Would someone with reasonable to high self esteem conetmplate suicide? I would think not, because to contemplate ending your own life you would have to not put much value in it (low esteem) because people don't usually consider destroying things of value such as their own life if they put value in it (aka high esteem). Is this a reasonable conclusion? \

A. This is probably true in some cases, but in others it isn't. Some suicides happen due to loss of honor like the Samurai, in protest of something like those Buddhists in the 60s, some people simply have a sincere desire to just give up living, like a lot of the PTS sufferers. I would imagine a lot of these people might have average self-esteem. So, it would be a mistake to say that suicide is always caused by low-self esteem. And it would probably also would be a mistake to say that low self-esteem always leads to suicide, because there are a lot of people who don't end up killing themselves even if they have self-esteem.
